In an effort to get ahead with 5G, Verizon is looking to include YouTube TV or Apple TV as part of a launch promotion in its initial four markets.

As reported by Variety, Verizon will include a YouTube TV subscription, or an Apple TV 4K in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Houston, and Indianapolis — the company’s initial launch cities.

Verizon plans to be the first wireless company in the United States to roll out 5G in the residential broadband space later this year, with support from mobile device manufactures to begin in early 2019.

Verizon says specifics regarding the YouTube TV subscription will be announced when the 5G residential broadband services is live.

As we’ve learned with 4G LTE, 5G will likely be the same mess in terms of what technologies qualify as “5G”. With the early days of 4G, there was a debate whether or not HSPA+ qualified as 4G, or if LTE was the determining factor. We expect a similar transition into 5G, as carriers will likely use LTE as the backbone for 5G growth.
