Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opened earlier in 2016, prior to the official launch of the summer movie season. Directed by Zack Snyder, and operating as a followup to Man of Steel, the film was designed as the second in a one-two punch that would launch the DC Comics Extended Universe to rival that of Marvel Studios. Unfortunately, Batman V Superman opened to largely negative reviews, many of which revolved around the film’s cynical tone and unflattering depiction of DC’s most cherished heroes.

Dawn of Justice still managed a nearly $900M box office take, but rumors suggest that WB execs are keeping a closer eye on Snyder as he directs Justice League: Part One. Plus, Geoff Johns has been put in charge of overseeing the DCEU. However, Justice League: Part One will feature previously introduced heroes like Aquaman and The Flash before they receive their own films. Now, Aquaman director James Wan (Furious 7, Saw) has commented on Batman V Superman and the ongoing DCEU.

In an interview with the Italian news outlet Bad Taste, Wan was asked how the feedback to Batman V Superman affects his approach to Aquaman:

I think it’s a world that is so difficult to control. And always, expectations of fans are just out of this world, right? No pun intended. And I know how it is to make Conjuring 2, just knowing how much expectation there is from the first movie. And I think you do the best you can, and just tell the best story you can.

Considering the post-Batman V Superman rumor that Wan was considering leaving the project, it’s good to hear him keeping things in perspective. Wan has already stated that he expected Aquaman to be a “fun” film, regardless of how dark the story goes. He has also reassured fans that while he will be playing in the DCEU, Snyder has been very supportive of letting him tell his own story.

Warner Bros. has stated that they intend to allow the DC films to be very creator driven, and fans may be appeased that, even in the wake of the studio’s recent restructuring, Wan feels comfortable that he’ll have a voice. This summer brings the first non-Snyder directed DCEU film to the screen with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. It will be interesting to see how the styles of Ayer and Wan, in addition to the directors tapped for DCEU films, contrast with or complement what has already been established.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’s “Ultimate Edition” will become available on Digital HD on June 28th, 2016 and Blu-ray on July 19th, 2016.

Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 16, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
