Aquaman S Underwater World Is So Separate From Other Dc Movies

Aquaman director James Wan (Furious 7) says the film is “separate” from the rest of the DC Universe in terms of look and feel - not continuity. Fans got their first look at the half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) in Batman v Superman. But it wasn’t until Justice League where Aquaman really got the chance to show off his powers. The character doesn’t seem to be the most obvious choice to star in the first solo film after that team up, especially when better known heroes like the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Batman (Ben Affleck) still don’t have their own movies. However, Warner Brothers seems to have confidence that Aquaman will take DC “on the right path.”

Aquaman will take place in the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. The movie reunites Momoa’s hero with Amber Herd’s Mera who was also in Justice League. Also appearing are Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta, and Patrick Wilson as the movie’s villain King Orm.

In an interview with EW, Wan explains what makes his film different from the rest of the DC Universe. With all of the previous DC films set mostly in cities, it is the underwater setting that plays a key role. There are seven different underwater kingdoms which give the director a whole new world to invent and play in.

The water world my movie takes place in is so separate and so far apart from previous DC movies it’s like I’m making my own sci-fi fantasy film. This is a whole new underwater world nobody has seen before in live action.

This setting also means epic underwater fight scenes and characters riding sharks into battle. Aquaman has more freedom to be fun and creative because it is not something that’s been done before. And while the character certainly has fans, Arthur Curry isn’t as well known, giving the creators a little more wiggle room.

The footage of Aquaman that premiered at CinemaCon already showed how different the new film is from the rest of the DC Universe. Attendees praised the epic scale of the footage as well as Momoa’s performance. The actor brings humor and physicality to the role which will see him torn by his duel identity. Wan promised the trailer would be released for fans “soon” and with San Diego Comic-Con around the corner there is sure to be a lot more news.
