No, this isn’t the Apple Watch. But it appears there has been enough time between Apple’s unveiling and CES for smaller accessory makers to prepare offerings inspired by the device in time for the show. An organization representing emergency services in more than 80 countries worldwide has argued that apps can be a better way to report an emergency than making a call. The European Emergency Number Association (EENA) made the suggestion as it announced that emergency apps designed for use in one European country will in future work across borders … TNW reports that the Pan-European Mobile Emergency App (PEMEA) initiative has already got Spain and Italy on board, and plans to have over eight countries signed up by the end of next year....

As promised by director James Wan, the first trailer for Aquaman was released today at SDCC 2018. It offered viewers their first big-screen glimpse of DC’s world beneath the waves, with scenes even featuring the City of Atlantis itself. The character of Aquaman was created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger back in 1941, and in the comics he was actually one of the founding members of the Justice League. However, it was only last year when Aquaman made his way to the big screen inJustice League, ahead of his 2018 solo movie....

DC’s upcoming underwater epic Aquaman reportedly has a budget of $160 million. That puts it in line with other recent superhero films featuring lesser known heroes, and decidedly cheaper than some of DC’s other recent output. Aquaman tells the story of Arthur Curry (played by Game of Thrones’ Jason Momoa) a man of two worlds. The son of a human fisherman and an Atlantean queen, Aquaman is the rightful ruler of Atlantis, but faces scrutiny from other Atlanteans due to his human genetics, and is generally met by violent political pushback....

Here’s how to stream every previously released Fast and Furious installment ahead of the ninth film, F9, in May 2020 and the untitled tenth installment in April 2021. Apple is adding a new “Movement Disorder API” to its open-source ResearchKit framework that will allow Apple Watch to continuously monitor Parkinson’s disease symptoms. The new API will provide app developers using ResearchKit the ability to offer passive, all-day monitoring via an Apple Watch running watchOS 5. To achieve this the API will monitor two very common symptoms of Parkinson’s including Tremors, indicated by shaking and quivering detected by the Apple Watch, and Dyskinesia, a side-effect of treatments for Parkinson’s that causes fidgeting and swaying motions in patients....

While most analysts are expecting Apple to comfortably beat its holiday quarter guidance of $75.5-$77.5B, one large firm of analysts goes much further. An investment note by Morgan Stanley seen by Business Insider says that an analysis of Apple’s financial report suggests that the company could be gearing up for quarterly sales totalling as much as $84.4B. The clue, claims the company, is the company’s off balance-sheet spending commitments. It should be noted that although Apple has recently been beating its own guidance of late, this has typically been by just a few percent – nothing like the leap Morgan Stanley is suggesting....

Apple is making many of its services smarter in iOS 10 and macOS Sierra through the use of differential privacy which enables artificial intelligence to become smarter while still balancing privacy. Given Apple’s strong position on protecting user privacy, Recode requested more details on how the company’s use of differential privacy would work. Apple so far has resisted collecting a lot of user data that could make Siri, iCloud, and other services smarter....

Update 10/7: Apple has also stopped signing iOS 13.1. Today, Apple has stopped signing iOS 13.1.1 after releasing iOS 13.1.2 earlier this week with more bug fixes and improvements. That means users are no longer able to downgrade from the current iOS version to iOS 13.1.1. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks of updates for Apple since releasing iOS 13 to the public. As unionization efforts proceed at Apple Stores across the country, a fourth location has begun forming a union. The Apple Store at Oxmoor Center Mall in Louisville, Kentucky, has announced it is organizing a campaign, reported by Bloomberg Law. The group’s leader, Specialist Jay Hedgspeth, believes the store may even have enough support to win an election. According to him, the employees are sick of low pay relative to Apple’s profits and feel that the metrics-driven culture has left them feeling disconnected from their work....

According to IT Home, Apple has sent a survey to users to ask about the iPad mini 4 screen size. Although Apple has now been selling the iPad mini 5 for a couple of years, both of them have the same screen size. In the survey, customers are asked whether the display is too small or too big. They also inquire about the iPad mini accessories, if customers are using its included power and cable, a stylus, keyboard, headphones, speakers, protective case, etc....

Apple has announced in a new support document that an update to Mac OS X will be issued in “the coming days” to find and squash malware. This malware comes through supposed anti-virus software that is actually built to steal private information like credit card numbers. In the meantime, Apple is now offering a manual resolution for users who wish to remove and find malware as soon as possible. The solution is pasted after the break....

Apple has hired veteran Disney executive Ricky Strauss, to take up the role as the new head of marketing for its streaming service Apple TV+. The appointment follows the departure of prior marketing head Chris Van Amburg, in September. Strauss will be based out of Apple’s worldwide video offices in Culver City, as a member of Apple’s marketing communications team. He will lead marketing campaigns for Apple’s original series and films....
