Right on schedule, Apple has registered new Apple Watch models with the Eurasian Economic Commission. This comes ahead of the rumored Apple Watch Series 7 introduction in September with a new form factor, design, and other changes. As first spotted by Consomac, the new Apple Watch models referenced in the latest Eurasian Economic Commission filings are: A2473, A2474, A2475, A2476, A2477, and A2478. It’s hard to discern too many details from Apple model numbers, but the database filings are often good indicators of release timetables....

After debuting its largest and most rugged wearable to date last month, today Apple released one of the ads that it showed during its keynote event. “Call To The Wild” touts various extreme conditions that Apple Watch Ultra can handle. But it knows audiences won’t listen unless they’re entertained, which is a balance that screenwriter April Wolfe worked hard to achieve. Aqara, one of my favorite HomeKit vendors, has debuted another product just after the release of its Smart Feeder for Pets. Today, it’s upgrading the popular Aqara Cube Controller with HomeKit and Alexa support. The Aqara Cube T1 Pro’s functionality is similar to the original design, except it recognizes additional actions: push, shake, rotate, and tap. In the wake of everything new announced today in the Mac lineup, Apple has stopped selling the legacy MacBook Pro with non-Retina screen, 5400 RPM hard-disk and SuperDrive optical disc slot. This Mac has existed in the lineup for many years and has finally been discontinued. Apple has also stopped selling the 11-inch MacBook Air, which used to be the cheapest Mac portable in the lineup. This position has been supplanted by the $999 13 inch MacBook Air, which has not been changed at all....

A week after releasing iOS 14.7.1 to the public, Apple today stopped signing iOS 14.7. That means users who have updated their devices or iOS 14.7.1 or even iOS 15 beta can no longer downgrade to iOS 14.7. iOS 14.7.1 was released on July 26 with a fix for a bug that prevented users from unlocking an Apple Watch using Touch ID on the iPhone. The update also fixes a security vulnerability that had been exploited by hackers....

Apple’s release notes for OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 4 reveal that the company will be wiping CloudKit data tomorrow. This data has to do with the new iCloud storage APIs in iOS 8 and Yosemite as well as with the upcoming iCloud Drive online storage feature. Apple’s first iOS Developer Academy opened in Naples, Italy this week, but the company doesn’t plan to make that its only presence in the company. At an event celebrating the opening of the Naples location, Apple’s VP of environment, policy, and social initiatives Lisa Jackson announced that Apple plans to expand its program further (via Macitynet). Jackson explained that Apple is working with at least five universities in the Campania region to expand Apple’s initiatives in Italy with a new iOS Foundation Program....

Apple TV+ today announced its latest partnership deal, first reported by Deadline. The company has signed a first-look deal for feature films with Imagine Entertainment, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s production company. Before hiring Zack van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht from Sony to launch Apple’s original video content division, Apple was in talks to possibly acquire Imagine with Howard and Grazer taking the top jobs at Apple TV+. Howard and Grazer reportedly declined the role on good terms, with Apple and Imagine instead signing a first-look deal for documentary content....

Anticipating the release of tvOS 10.2, Jamf today announced support for Apple’s Device Enrollment Program and expanded Mobile Device Management features for Apple TV, meaning organizations will soon be able to set up, configure and distribute apps for Apple TVs in bulk in the same way already available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Following the release of iOS 16 beta 3 for developers earlier today, Apple has now updated the beta firmware for the AirPods, which is also available to developers. The update enhances the Automatic Switching feature and brings other improvements to Apple’s wireless headphones. Apple has announced that it is ending support for the original watchOS SDK and original Apple Watch 1.0 apps, which required a phone to even open. From June 1st, Apple will require developers of new Apple Watch apps to use the native SDK, which came with watchOS 2. The requirement was posted on the Apple Developer news page last night. A major criticism of Apple Watch is that it is not fast enough, with apps often sluggish to open and respond to user input....
