IfoAppleStore drew our attention to the fact that Apple is opening its third Dutch retail store on Saturday, in Den Haag (The Hague). Apple’s existing stores in the Netherlands are in Amsterdam and Haarlem. While Amsterdam is the official capital of the Netherlands, Den Haag is where the country’s government is based, being home to its parliament and Supreme Court. The Hague is best known for the International Criminal Court, where war crimes and crimes against humanity are heard … Apple recently obtained a European trademark for the design of its stores, and has been busy updating everything from the visuals through the organizational structure to the customer service approach of its retail store network....

Apple has published a new series of videos in celebration of Earth Day that both highlight the company’s green energy efforts and explain some of the science behind clean energy today. The video series includes comical illustrations and narrations from Apple execs including VP Lisa Jackson. Each video poses a question and features an Apple employee explaining the company’s environmental strategy: Do solar farms feed yaks? Can we produce zero waste?...

Maybe Jobs’ liver transplant ordeal gave him the final answer. During his stay in the hospital, he had to have seen what an absurd nightmare of a bureaucracy the US health care system was and at the same time what benefit a tablet could bring to the whole operation. Doctors often use bulky, three pound tablets to do their work. Can you imagine Jobs in the hospital seeing people running around with an unreliable Windows Vista tablet....

Update: The store is back up and the new MacBook Air is now available to order. The Apple Store has gone down ahead of the new 2022 MacBook Air with M2 chip going up for preorder in a few hours. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 went on sale last month. The new Air features the latest Apple Silicon core in an all-new design, eschewing the classic MacBook Air tapered edge chassis....

A Community Education Initiative (CEI) is seeing Apple supporting teachers with a coding and creativity program designed to be compatible with remote learning. Apple created the CEI with the specific goal of helping teachers work with communities that are traditionally underrepresented in technology … While the Everyone Can Code and Develop in Swift curricula play a major role, the CEI is about more than just coding. Birmingham City Schools fourth grade science and social studies teacher Portrice Warren […] is one of nearly 500 educators who participated in a massive virtual coding academy this summer as part of Apple’s Community Education Initiative....

Not the Apple TV, but an Apple television. Apple has posted a new job position looking for people to work on next-generation power supply technology. Apple needs people to to “work on the forefront of new power management designs and technologies with the exemplary company consistently bringing innovations in the industry.” Although some mind find that fascinating, we find what Apple needs this new power management technology to power even more interesting… TVs!...

Silicon Alley Insider says they are hearing some rumors of a social networking app coming from Apple. The report is riddled with pre-backtracking so it is far from certainty. But, what they might be hearing whispers about is “Places” the social networking idea Apple trademarked recently. We also detailed clues about MediaStream, a social network-like photo/video/music sharing service with bits we found in iOS 4.3 (which may debut tomorrow as well)....

Apple is planning to change up retail in India in a big—and small—way, according to a report by The Economic Times. According to the Times, Apple plans to open a collection of small, iOS-centric stores. The stores will be setup by local distribution partners, not by first-party retail staff. While the main focus of these locations will be on mobile devices, Apple’s other offerings will also be represented to some degree in each store....

Update: You can now watch all episodes of Fraggle Rock on Apple TV+ here. Apple TV+ is said to have bought rights to the full back catalog of Fraggle Rock, comprising about 100 episodes of the live action puppet show originally owned by HBO. Apple has already funded a short set of ‘Fraggle Rock On’ shorts, and is now taking that relationship further. In addition to the full back catalog of Fraggle Rock, Apple is ordering a season reboot of the show with full-length episodes....

Apple TV+ launches in early November and will cost $4.99 per month. This year, streaming mainstays like Netflix and Hulu are going to get some serious competition from some of the entertainment industry’s biggest companies. Much has already been said about Disney+, the Mouse House’s streaming platform that will be the exclusive home to Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and an abundance of other programming. Apple is also looking to make a splash in the streaming realm, recruiting a lineup of heavy-hitting creatives to oversee shows and movies for Apple TV+....

Apple has just released an update for last year’s WWDC app to address an issue that has prevented developers from being able to watch session videos through the app for quite some time time. All of the videos are also available on the iOS developer portal, so the bug fix probably wasn’t very high on Apple’s priority list. If you still want to use the WWDC app for some reason, it’s available for free on the App Store, but requires a paid developer login to view the videos....

Apple acknowledged in its FDA submission that the Apple Watch cannot detect AFib when the heart-rate is above 120 beats per minute, and a report today suggests this means it may fail to detect the condition in anywhere between 30% and 60% of cases. Apple has always been careful to stress the limitations of the Watch’s ability to detect AFib … A Fortune report today notes this. However, it says that the inability of the Watch to detect AFib when the user’s heart-rate is above 120bpm is a very significant limitation....

WWDC 2022 begins next week with the opening keynote on Monday, and we’ll finally get to see the next versions of Apple’s operating systems. Among all the rumors for watchOS 9, there’s one that caught my attention – a new low power mode for the Apple Watch. And in fact, I do think that the Apple Watch should have a smart low power mode. Adobe Photoshop Express Version 2.5: The free universal iPhone and iPad app was updated to include the Adobe Effects Pack of “45- eye-catching effects” and the Enhanced Adobe Border Pack with 18 new borders as in-app purchases....

Aquaman’s first trailer debuted during Warner Bros.’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Co 2018 and was released online soon after, but the overall response to the trailer was mixed, so one fan already created a remixed version that ends up being better than the real thing. The trailer that WB released online is not the only Aquaman trailer that was screened at the convention, but the second trailer shown during the panel remains a Comic-Con exclusive....

According to a new interview, Dolph Lundgren’s character in Aquaman will undergo one major change from his comic book counterpart. The King of Atlantis’ solo movie will debut amongst a crowded field of box office challengers when it releases in December. And because it will be the first DCEU film since the critical and commercial disappointment that was Justice League, it actually has a lot riding on its shoulders. The inevitable roadblocks of filming a live-action movie in which the characters live underwater only adds to the pressure the film is facing....

Earlier this week, a group of Apple employees announced that they were organizing under the hashtag #AppleToo to collect stories from workers at all levels of the company in regards to workplace issues. Now, #AppleToo organizers say they have already collected almost 500 stories of such issues, and they plan to go public starting on Monday. In a post on Twitter today (via Protocol), the #AppleToo organizers wrote that the “main thread” in the responses and stories they’ve received so far is “being ignored by HR....

Apple’s original content and video efforts have been described as scattered at best in earlier reports, but now it looks like the company is trying to do something about that. According to a new report from The Information, Apple is currently in the process of searching for a programming chief to spearhead its video efforts… The report explains that former HBO programming head Michael Lombardo recently met with Apple about the position and could be a candidate....
