Following on the heels of a record-breaking quarter for Apple, Strategy Analytics has crunched the numbers and crowned Apple the king of the smartphone vendors for Q4 2014—or rather, one of the kings. It seems the Cupertino company managed to tie rival Samsung for the title. Both companies shipped 74.5 million handsets during the quarter, though Samsung still outsold Apple in terms of the annual total by a hefty margin. Those quarterly sales gave both companies an equal marketshare of 19....

We knew in July that Apple had passed the imploding Nokia for the global smartphone unit lead by manufacturer. However, today Digitimes forecasts that by year end Apple will have sold 86.4 million iPhones by year which will easily best Nokia’s once insurmountable lead (Nokia had over double Apple’s share just last year). Just because it almost doubled its unit shipment, doesn’t mean it is game over for Apple, however. Apple Watch blood pressure measurement has long been rumored, but a Nikkei report yesterday suggested that the feature would be included in the upcoming Series 7 model. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says not, in a two-word reply to someone querying that on Twitter … Nikkei‘s report focused on claims of production problems with the latest Watch. But it said that one example of those “significant” differences was blood pressure measurement. Apple has announced on its developer blog that it will require all apps submitted to the iOS App Store to support IPv6-only networks from June 1 2016. Apple originally introduced the transition a year ago at WWDC 2015, implying it would soon become a requirement. A small subset of apps in the App Store will need to update their code to support IPv6-only networks; Apple has posted relevant guidelines on its developer documentation website....

There’s no single factor that explains Apple’s record earnings in the holiday quarter. Strategic Analytics released its latest report today that depicted global smartphone shipments growing to 162 million in Q3 2012, and Apple managed to grab second place with 16.6-percent global share. “(Apple) shipped 26.9 million smartphones worldwide for 17 percent market share, up from 14 percent recorded a year earlier,” said Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston in a press release. “Apple had a solid quarter in the important United States market and this helped to strengthen its global performance....

Apple has published a new support document detailing its plans to revamp the existing two-factor authentication system that it first launched last year. The document is careful to differentiate the two systems, referring to the existing one as “two-step verification” and the newer one as “two-factor authentication.” The latest update to the iOS 9 beta has introduced initial support for the new system, but most users, including those running the beta, will need to wait until later this year to gain access to it....

AliveCor already offers the first FDA-approved EKG reader for Apple Watch with its Kardiaband system, and a new study shows how that hardware may be capable of even more medical achievements. A new Cleveland Clinic Study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 67th Annual Scientific Session reveals that AliveCor’s EKG system can be used to detect a condition called hyperkalemia. AliveCor touts the study’s findings that it’s able to achieve “non-invasive detection of high potassium levels in blood” through its EKG reader when paired with artificial intelligence technology....

Aquaman director James Wan inspired Willem Dafoe’s return to the superhero genre. One of Apple’s semiconductor experts, Kim Woo-Pyeong, is going to work for a major competitor – Samsung Electronics. Apple has now shared a lengthy The Morning Show trailer after the frustratingly short and choppy teaser video last week. The upcoming drama starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell will be streamed on Apple TV+, the company’s original content video service set to launch in the fall… Variety spotted it. One of the few new features of the Apple Watch Series 7 is support for fast charging, which results in 33% faster charging time when compared to the Apple Watch Series 6. However, Apple says that fast charging requires a new USB-C cable (which now comes bundled in the box), but MagSafe Duo owners may not be able to take advantage of this feature.
