Former Inquirer writer Charlie Demerjian at SemiAccurate (via MacRumors) today posts that Apple’s laptop transition from Intel to ARM is a “Done deal” Scholars of recent history would point to Apple’s two earlier architecture transitions as examples of Apple’s hardware flexibility. That being said, two-three years from now iOS might be more of a laptop-capable OS from which Apple could build some, if not all of its laptops on. Interestingly, nowhere in the post is any mention of the words ‘Mac’ or ‘Macintosh’....

This seems like a good idea. Apple’s opening a Retail Store next year in Chicago near a run-down subway station at North and Clybourn. Apple would like to spruce up the place in exchange for 4 million dollars in advertising money (which if Chicago is anything like NYC, is gonna happen anyway). A CTA spokeswoman confirmed that the transit authority is in talks with the computer and iPhone behemoth about a deal that could net the cash-strapped CTA as much as $4 million in funding from Apple to pay for an upgrade of the run-down subway station at North and Clybourn, which is adjacent to an Apple retail store now under construction and expected to open next year....

Trademark attorney Brian Conroy today published evidence of new trademarks that Apple possibly plans to use for upcoming products. Most notably, the trademark filings reference an “Iris Engine” and “AirPods case,” leading to speculation that Apple could use the branding for new products and features to be unveiled at its event tomorrow. The discoveries follow previous reports of filings for the “AirPods” trademark thought to be a name in consideration for new wireless headphones Apple has in the works....

Apple Watch has a curvy history with the color gold and accompanying straps. The original 18K gold Apple Watch Edition paired with a range of straps before being discontinued. Aluminum models have included three shades of gold (rose gold, gold, and “new” gold) with Sport and (now discontinued) Woven Nylon bands using gold hardware. Gold variations aren’t sold separately either which makes them somewhat rare. Apple Watch Series 4 comes in two flavors of gold — aluminum and new stainless steel — but the gold band variety is still limited....

As the legal disputes between Apple and Qualcomm continue, the latest chapter falls in Apple’s favor, as a federal judge has ruled Apple cannot be held liable for patent infringements prior to the lawsuit’s filing date, reports Bloomberg Quint. The decision comes following a request by Apple to dismiss Qualcomm’s attempts at seeking prior damages. Currently, the trial is set to begin next month at a San Diego federal court, hometown of chipmaker Qualcomm....

In case you want to protect your $349 HomePod from accidental damage, you’ll be able to get AppleCare+ coverage for $39. That’s what we found in a document distributed to Apple Stores, which shows that the cost of AppleCare+ for HomePod in the US will be $39. The coverage includes AirPort products and “adds up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling for HomePod, each subject to a $39 service fee”....

If Jason Momoa could pick any two DC characters to appear in Aquaman 2 it would be Wonder Woman and The Flash. A sequel to Aquaman has not been green-lit officially. There are rumors though that a sequel is in development and given the critical and potential financial success of Aquaman, a followup seems like a certainty. The DCEU’s effort to create a solo story for Arthur Curry looks like it’s exactly what the troubled movie universe needed, and at the very least, it’s better received than Justice League....

Aquaman will arrive in theaters in a little less than a month, but new stills of Arthur Curry battling Orm have just arrived. Aquaman first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in 1941, and was also one of the original six Justice League members. He made his cinematic debut in 2016 in a cameo during Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and returned a year later for Justice League. From marketing materials and information that have been released about the film thus far, Aquaman looks to have two villains; King Orm and Black Manta....

Aquaman’s Curry Lighthouse is currently coming to life in the form of a large new set off the coast of Australia. Director James Wan has been busy shooting scenes in various Australian locations since the start of May, and titular star Jason Momoa has been preparing for his role since well before that. Momoa will play Arthur Curry, who will learn of his true place in the world as Aquaman during the course of the movie....

NASCAR stock car racing is a case in point. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook just talked about Apple’s services and numbers, as well as Maps, during its Q1 2013 earnings call. Cook said Notification Center sent more than 4 trillion notifications, and iMessages sent over 450 billion messages (about 2 billion per day). The Game Center also has 200 million registered users, while the App Store is at 40 billion downloads (2 billion occurred in December alone). Apple’s plan to establish 500 mobile-focused reseller stores in India is reportedly well underway, with NDTV Gadgets reporting that more than 100 of the partners for its Authorised Mobility Resellers (AMR) program have already been signed-up. An Apple-appointed contractor is building the stores’ interiors to ensure that they conform to Apple’s design and size requirements, before handing them back to the third-party resellers to operate. The partners are reportedly being selected by Apple on the basis of their track-record in selling Apple products....

Apple has released a third beta of iTunes 10.5.1 to developers with performance and stability improvements. The beta, which is now available on the iOS Developer Center allows for continued testing of iTunes Match. Apple’s email to registered developers: iTunes Match missed its planned end of October launch date, and now that beta releases are coming out more quickly, we think an official launch is not too far off. Apple is gearing up to soon begin hardware repairs for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in its chain of retail stores, according to sources with knowledge of the upcoming initiative. These sources say that Apple Stores will be able to replace several parts of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on-site, meaning that Apple will no-longer need to fully replace iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units with damage or other problems…...

Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive spoke at the British Embassy’s Creative Summit this morning about Apple’s design focus, and Wired was on hand to get the report. Apple’s newest Shot on iPhone short film has hit YouTube today, this time in honor of Black History Month. The new short film, entitled Hometown, is part of a “series highlighting Black photographers across the United States.” Apple first announced this Hometown initiative on February 1, and it’s expanding the campaign with a new video today. Hometown features 32 of the “most visionary Black photographers” in the United States. The new Shot on iPhone video comes from Phillip Youmans, who is the youngest director to win at the Tribeca Film Festival....
