The new Apple TV embargo has lifted and The Verge’s Nilay Patel notes a couple of interesting tidbits about the new set-top box in his review. Firstly, the surprising lack of Dolby Atmos will apparently be rectified in a future software update (although Apple didn’t share a timeline). Perhaps more shockingly, the native YouTube app for the Apple TV doesn’t support 4K or HDR playback … Apple TV 4K is easily the most expensive smart set-top TV box there is, starting at $179 for the 32 GB model....

Today, Apple has released software updates for the Mac version of iPhoto and for Aperture. The updates both focus on bug fixes and improvements. Notably, both apps were given improvements and fixes for Photo Stream integration. iPhoto now has easier image deleting and exporting from Photo Stream, while Aperture has a bug fix related to Shared Photo Streams. Safari and Java were also updated with improved security (release notes below). Notably, the new update introduces controls to specify which websites can use Java – something that should help prevent malicious websites from exploiting the never-ending stream of Java exploits....

Apple is among a handful of companies who have just been honored with Emmy awards. Yes, you read that right. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the awards in a press release today, highlighting the “Sciences” aspect of its name. TechCrunch was first to note the inclusion of companies like Apple, DJI, Microsoft, and others. We finally know what Black Manta will look like in Aquaman - or at least what he’ll look at the start of his journey. Instead that position will go to Arthur Curry’s half-brother, Orm, who is being played by Patrick Wilson. Apple is breaking into the streaming video business, but not necessarily with a whole new service. Apple has just shared a new video to its official Apple Support YouTube channel showing how to use an iPad with the new Magic Keyboard and other trackpads, highlighting some available gestures and settings. The video demonstrates how the advanced cursor feature works on iPadOS 13.4, which appears when you’re using it and disappears as soon as you stop touching the trackpad. It shows that users can slide up with three fingers to open the App Switcher, slide to the right corner of the screen to see the Slide Over apps, and more....

Apple will in future be able to assess the Apple Silicon environmental impact at an early stage in chip design, thanks to taking a lead role in a new research initiative. The program is likely to help with Apple’s stated environmental goal of becoming 100% carbon neutral by 2030. iPhone and Apple Watch launch day at an Apple Store is always a special experience. At six locations throughout the U.S., Japan, and China, Apple made this year’s release a little more special by unveiling all-new and remodeled stores. The GTAT mess may have forced Apple to abandon its presumed plans to replace iPhone Gorilla Glass screens with sapphire, but next year’s iPhone displays could still prove up to twice as shatter-resistant, says glass-maker Corning. Corning said that studying hundreds of broken phone screens had revealed the unsurprising fact that shattered screens most commonly occurred in a one-meter drop onto a rough surface like concrete or asphalt. Drop tests in these conditions found that Gorilla Glass 4 survived up to 80% of such impacts – twice the record of the Gorilla Glass 3 used in current iPhones....

In addition to questioning from lawmakers in the U.S. and other countries around the world, the company today testified in front of a House of Commons committee regarding the iPhone slowdown controversy… As noted by iMore, Geekbench’s John Poole and Apple Canada testified in front of the House of Commons committee responsible for looking into the controversy and how Apple handled the situation....

Update: The popular third-party macOS Apple Events app has also been updated for next week’s event. Apple this evening has updated its Apple Events app for Apple TV ahead of next week’s iPhone 8 showcase. The update brings the app in line with the color scheme used on Apple’s invites for the iPhone event. Apple is also promoting its September Special Event on its website with a landing page… The Apple TV app now showcases the upcoming September event and is based around the multi-color scheme of the invites Apple sent out last week, further building hype....

Apple’s iAd Producer tool for creating HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript ads for its iAd platform gets updated to version 4.0 today and adds a number of notable new features on top of some performance enhancements that Apple outlined in a knowledge base article. The updated app now allows users to create iBooks Author widgets, iTunes LPs, and iTunes Extras. Apple quietly made some updates to specs and pricing for some of its Retina MacBook Pro lineup. Apple announced today in a press release that it lowered the price of the entry-level 128GB 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro to $1,499 and the 256GB model to $1,699. The models previously sold for $1,699 and $1,999. Apple also upgraded the processor in the latter model with a 2.6GHz processor (up from 2.5). As for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pros, Apple said the entry-level model would now come with a faster 2....

Apple today made a pair of small announcements for developers and users. First off, the company has pushed a small update for the Apple Support app on iOS. Furthermore, Apple added new capabilities to Transporter, its command-line delivery tool… The Apple Support app has been updated to version 2.1, bringing users “performance improvements and bug fixes.” It’s not a major update, but with a growing number of users accessing Apple Support due to the iPhone battery repair program, performance improvements are definitely welcomed....

While Apple has basically removed all accessories that come with new iPhones in the box, it was reported in October that the company had to keep shipping them with EarPods in France due to local laws. Apple unveiled Podcast Analytics over the summer at WWDC, and today the new feature for podcasters is finally available in beta. From June on Podcast Analytics: Podcasters can access the new analytics feature starting today from iTunes Connect at podcastsconnect.apple.com/analytics. Apple notes that the data “includes devices with iOS 11 or iTunes 12.7, or later” and may be delayed by up to three days. Podcasts can be browsed by show to view devices (total number of unique devices that a show has been played), total time listened (total number of hours a show has been listened to across all devices), and time per device (average time a show has been listened to per device)....
